Quick-reference definitions
Black hat SEO refers to manipulative tactics intended to influence search rankings in ways that violate search engine spam policies. White hat generally refers to helpful, policy-aligned optimization. Gray hat is an informal label, not a Google policy category.
Signals versus proof
Unusual link spikes, repeated anchor text, sudden doorway-page growth and unexpected redirects are investigative signals. None alone proves misconduct. Compare historical baselines, deployment logs, crawl data and user-visible content before making a claim.
Tool categories
Crawlers help inventory pages and redirects; backlink tools help investigate linking patterns; log analyzers show bot activity; plagiarism tools reveal similarity; Search Console exposes indexing and manual-action notices. Tools are diagnostic instruments, not proof of a penalty.
Audit triage
Prioritize compromised pages, deceptive redirects, indexing anomalies, unsupported schema and harmful third-party content. Document the affected URLs, evidence, severity, owner and resolution date. Retest after changes are deployed.
Link vocabulary
Anchor text is the clickable label of a link. Nofollow, sponsored and UGC are link qualification values. A PBN is a private blog network. Link velocity describes change in linking activity; it is not a standalone ranking score.
Content vocabulary
Cloaking is presenting substantially different material to crawlers and people. Doorway pages are near-duplicate funnels. Keyword stuffing is unnatural repetition. Scraping copies third-party material; spinning mechanically rewrites it without meaningful added value.
